Cognitive theory shows us that automatic thoughts that are distorted due to conditioned schemas arise and feed into emotions that feed back into distorted thoughts. In the same way, sometimes feeling tones arise that we feel compelled to label and identify that are paired with distorted thoughts and the cycle can begin in that way as well. In the Mindfulness Model, by bringing our attention and focus to the breath or the sensations of the body non-judgmentally, we can condition ourselves to break the cycle of distorted thoughts and emotions and begin to approach our thoughts and emotions in a completely different way. Conditioned practice in a way that resonates with us naturally brings awareness to the cycles that reoccur. Ongoing awareness breaks the cycles. If you know, it will break. If you don't know, it will continue. Finding and maintaining your personal practice is now a proven way to enact neuroplastic changes in the brain's structure to enhance executive function, increase memory, and change the way we perceive in order to increase awareness and provide us with the space to choose the life that we actually want.
